"Yeah well your brother's obviously about as much use as you are. You should try living with my older brother. Hard as nails he is..." Davey tailed off and inwardly winced, before straightening up.
"I did it cause I had to alright."

Jared raised an eyebrow at the body language, but he wasn't particularly surprised. This much anger, it usually started at home.
"Don't confuse hard with strong, kid. And most people in your situation find defense attorneys extremely useful--though you wouldn't be able to hire my brother if I'm the one pressing charges. Conflict of interest and all that."

Davey thought Jared might have actually understood, then he went and told him he would need legal help if he was going to press charges and his mood flipped.
"Just press your fucking charges then you fucking arse hole and get out of my face. I don't need you, I don't need anyone." he shouted, he was breaking and breaking fast.

"Daffyd," Jared answered the anger and fear in the kid's voice with quiet concern in his own. "If I press charges, with a record like this, you'll probably go to prison. You'd adapt to that environment, I'm sure, but you definitely be a chew toy before you'd worked it all out. The problem is that if I don't press charges and you go home, I'm afraid things will be even worse for you. What we really need here is a viable alternative."
Jared had some ideas, sure, but this was Daffyd's life, Daffyd's future. He needed to step up to the wheel and take charge.

"I don't need you, I don't need anyone, send me to prison." Of course Davey didn't want to go to prison, but he didn't want to go home either so he made his decision and stubbornly stuck to it.
"I just... I needed the money..."

Jared ignored the obvious bravado and focused on the glimmer of trust.
"Why do you need money? How much money?" he asked softly. Help me understand. Let me try to help you.

Davey looked up at Jared, stubbornly not allowing any of the pain or emotion he was feeling show.
"I have to get money for my brother, for my family." he added as an afterthought. "If I don't..." if he didn't then he would have more than one boot shaped print on his back today.
"It's my job."

"Your brother Euan?" Jared asked in a bland tone. He needed to sell this as passing interest, get the kid to answer the easy questions so he'll already be in the habit of talking when they got round to the harder questions.
Euan was 19, an adult in the eyes of the law. So was Daffyd's mother, for that matter. If he could prove that either of them knew where the money was coming from there were solid criminal charges to be filed. He was certain that officer Davidson had his ear pressed firmly to the door at this moment. That family had 4 kids younger than Daffyd. They needed to interrupt this cycle today.

Davey shook his head, "I work for him..." Euan joked and called it the "family" business. Davey looked at Jared, "It's tough y'know. Mam's got no money, and she's usually pissed out of her head so she can't take care of the kids. We've no money cause she wont get off her arse to work and Euan won't try to get a normal job." He was admitting too much but he couldn't stop talking.
"I had to work for him."

"Man's gotta meet his obligations," Jared agreed with the kid. "You've got hungry children in the house and you're just trying to take care of them."
He stopped to give the kid a chance to keep talking. The more of this that spilled forth on its own, the better for Daffyd.

"They're young... they don't know what's going on and if they get out of line mam or Euan see's to them. I try and keep them happy, nick them things to keep them quiet, keep them safe."
He didn't care about himself, but he didn't want anything to happen to his brothers and sister.

"You're protecting them," Jared restated his understanding of the hard line Daffyd was walking. "That's what a man does, he protects his family."
Jared leaned forward to catch the boy's gaze again, to keep him from thinking too far from the questions Jared was asking.
"The hardest thing is when you've gotta protect family from family."

"I don't know what you mean." he said defensively all of a sudden, things were getting too uncomfortable and he had gone from wanting to kill this bloke to wanting to talk to him. Davey learned when he was very young not to tell anyone anything.
"When can I get out of this shit hole?"

"Let me find out," Jared said amicably.
He went to the little window and called out, "Andy, how long until your guys pick up Euan Jackson?"
He hated scaring the kid but there was a lot at stake.

Andy opened the door and walked inside, glancing at Davey before talking to Jared.
"Depends really mate. If you press charges I'll lock him up until he's due in court. If you drop the charges I'll call his mam and we'll see what she has to say. Mind you, wouldn't want to be around if she decided to turn up. Scares the shit out of me she does."
