"Andy Davidson... nice to meet your Jared Baker..." he said with a small nod.
"I'm a PC with the Cardiff force, there are worse jobs and it keeps me busy." he smiled, "Nothing much else to tell. I'm pretty bloody boring if I'm honest." he admitted. He really did consider himself to be quite dull.

"I seriously doubt that, Andy," Jared boldly moved them to casual, friendly terms. "There's too much happening in Cardiff for anybody to truly be boring."
In Jared's experience everyone was more than they appeared at first glance.

Andy shook his finger at the doctor, "That's where your wrong Jared mate, see I was born here, into a police family and I'll die here sooner or later in a police family. That's about all there is to me." he said honestly, "I don't mind. I've got a job and a roof over my head, compared to some I'm bloody lucky." Andy didn't resent his lot in life, it gave him purpose but he was plain old PC 186 Andy Davidson.

"Well if that's boring, I'll raise my glass to it. Much better than hoping the road won't explode under your feet on your commute to work. Anyway's it's your circumstance that's boring. You, my friend are interesting to talk to."
If you took the Baker boys for example, the one who lived the predictable life was the one their parents spoke of with pride. Jared's life had already been far to exciting to qualify as respectable.

"You must have seen a lot..." Andy said thoughtfully, remembering back to the relative small fry he had dealt with. Although the 456 and the bombings had been pretty severe.
"I keep seeing kids and expect them to start talking as one again, don't think I'll ever get over that..." he said in a quiet voice and downed the last of his now tepid tea.

"Thank Jove we've seen the last of that," Jared answered absently before downing his coffee in reply.
He didn't think about the absolute confidence he had in that answer when the rest of Cardiff was likely still having nightmares on account. He'd watched UNIT move in, had bigger things to worry about, although the real monsters were still human as far as he could tell, and now he was with Torchwood. The inside view of what was up with alien invasion lent an air of certainty to his relief.

Andy forgot that everyone had witnessed that and not just him in his insular little Cardiff.
"Yeah, makes you see things in a different light doesn't it." he admitted, he had seen Gwen after she had given birth and was amazed as always by his friend who seemed to be able to cope with anything.
He smiled lightly to himself thinking he hadn't seen her for a while and he should give her a call, then remembered he was talking with Jared.
"Where were you when it happened?" he asked.

"I was at the hospital," Jared shared without hesitation. "Was supposed to be visiting my family in London but we lost a doctor and I was needed to fill in."
He gritted his teeth slightly. MI5 had dogged him that whole day, making sure he didn't talk to cops or reporters or worse. Sometimes he hated the government for it's sheer macho stupidity.
"Where you on shift?"

"Yeah, I started on shift but when things went to shit I just got deeper into it, I have a friend. She works for a kind of special ops and I ended up working with them. So many people were lost, all over." he said with a slight sigh.
"But times move on, new lives come around and everything shifts slightly. I wont forget the people we lost, but there's only so much you can do when your a bobby on the beat in Cardiff central." He laughed at himself then and snapped himself out of his maudlin malaise.
"What did you put in this tea? Depression powder?" he joked.

Jared blinked and fought down a scowl. "Special ops like MI5?" he asked with a hint of annoyance, "or UNIT?"
He was torn. He liked this guy but the only groups in Cardiff that would call themselves 'special ops' were UNIT, Mi5 and Torchwood.

"No." Andy said simply, taking another sip of his tea. "They don't exist any more anyway. It's a bloody long story, she's out of it anyway, had a little baby so I'm uncle Andy now." he said with a small but proud smile.
"I used to work with her, Gwen..." said with a sigh, "It changes things when something like that happens doesn't it. Her boss, he lost someone. Disappeared of the face of the Earth." Andy didn't know how literal he was being, "Everything went downhill from there..."

"Wait, you're talking about Torchwood. Gwen Cooper," Jared said in a soft rush of almost whispered words.
He was out of the habit of expecting the usual six degrees of separation to be closer to one or two when you treated the ill and injured at Cardiff A & E. It nearly floored him that their connection was through Torchwood itself.

Andy straightened suspiciously, "How do you know those names?" he asked, suddenly back on the defensive. He had had it drummed into him by Gwen herself that no one was to know about Torchwood, okay things had changed a bit since the 456, but still.
"You'd better tell me who you really are..."

That was the moment Jared realized Jack was probably going to be livid over the ill-considered revelation.
"Call her and ask if she knows a doctor Jared Baker..." he went with. Maybe he could blame it on pain meds and childbirth.

"Gwen wouldn't tell you about Torchwood while she was giving birth, she's a bloody strong woman. Even if she did you wouldn't remember any of it by now." Andy defended his best friend vehemently, and he always would to the end.
"What do you know of Torchwood?"
